p.m. >> susome snow falling tonight. >> we have been pretty lucky this year. not much sticking to the ground. that had ever to tom tasselmyer with an update. >> the warm temperatures of the past few days and this afternoon help this out quite a bit, keeping global temperatures -- temperatures warmer. this is moving out pretty quickly, tapering off in baltimore and points west and it will be gone by the early morning rush hour. it is a quick k inch or two of slushy, what snow. things will quiet down until another blast of cold over the weekend. more on that in a few minutes. >> are other big story. the police trainee during -- shot during a training exercise remains in critical condition. he was training to be a police

officer on the university of maryland campus. what led up to the shooting. as leaders bowed to get answers, -- vowed to get answers, we're joined live. >> the police trainee has undergone to surgery so far. members of the family gathered here and shop, for most of the day. police officials say they are determined to figure out why this happened and how to prevent it from ever happening again. >> i was so angry, i was almost speechless to think that something like this could happen. >> the mayor said wednesday there was no acceptable explanation as to why live rounds were used during a police training exercise that ended with the university of maryland trainee shot in the head. the mayor met with the trainees family at chartres, where he underwent surgery on wednesday. >> i made the commitment to the trainee's family that we would get to the bottom of it.

the commissioner is working with the state police with the investigation. it should not have happened. >> he was shot inadvertently by a veteran baltimore police instructor. part of the training that day was for recruits to learn how to enter a building using shields. the instructor grabbed his service weapon at some point instead of the training weapon he was carrying. and fired through window and shot the trainee in the forehead. the sessions are never supposed to involve live ammunition. the statement was issued announcing he has suspended six members of the police training academy pending an investigation. the maryland state police is conducting a criminal investigation. it is not clear if protocols were in place for the city to use the facility. tuesday was the first time. it is normally used by baltimore county for training. the last major city

investigation of a trading incident was in 2007 when baltimore fire cadet rachel wilson died after becoming trapped during a live burn training exercise. several elements were found that put cadets at risk. the police trainee was in his 40's. city police have not release the name of the instructor. >> san benito county sheriff's state deputies did not intentionally burn down the california mountain cabin where fugitive and ex-lapd officer was christopher dorner washoled hold up. >> their new details in the

apparent murder-suicides at an off-campus apartment. dayvon green shot and killed himself after killing one of his roommates. stepfather saw green pull a gun and he ran. he is expected to recover. rein had been studying english at the university of maryland. no word yet on funeral arrangements tree family members told police that green, the man authorities pulled the trigger, was suffering from mental illness. the social work professor said the issue of mental illness among college students must go from top to action. >> we need to talk especially to college students about if your roommate seems like they're

having difficulty or if they confide in you, seek out an adult to talk that over with and maybe they will be able to help you to get that student to the resident assistant. >> according to a national survey, college students receiving mental health services rank their counseling centers as excellent or good. >> police are searching for clues after an overnight stabbing in phil's point. it happened around 2:00 a.m. in the 200 block of south broadway. the victim was stabbed several times but is listed in stable condition. investigators say the suspect is still at large. one of the owners of the rec theater in towson said they are planning to convert the concert venue into a nightclub. the first phase began in december and will convert the main room and the attached bar and restaurant into a club calle

. the plant have been developing for a couple of years and not the result of a fight at that venue last year. >> much more information about the dangers of concussions and when it comes to sports, women's lacrosse is under the microscope. females are not required to wear head gear. we have been following that issue for several months and the lacrosse president is responding to a bill introduced in the maryland house of delegates passed by the general assembly requiring girls across -- to wear protective headgear. u.s. across has no time line for recommendations or potential role in action. the response, it is irresponsible to enact legislation requiring had protection in women's lacrosse without a clear understanding of the mechanism of head injury.

feel there is a better way than capital punishment, especially because there is life without parole. >> it is unusual for the catholic leader to get political but his predecessor, edwin o'brien, testified in 2009 in support of a compromise bill to make capital punishment more restrictive. >> there is no compromise on life. if we can move forward in a greater respect for the life of every human being, we're getting somewhere. >> the current passion for this issue stems from the pro-life stance of the church. >> we have a great consistency in their teaching about the value of human life from conception to natural death. it is different morally but it is consistent with that vision and a teaching. >> public opinion on this issue differs from church leadership. a 2012 pew research poll of u.s. catholics showed 59% are in favor of the death penalty for convicted murderers.

a 2013 poll of marylanders showed 49% support the death penalty although that is down from 56% in the same poll two years ago. others expected to testify tomorrow in support of the death penalty for appeal include gov. o'malley and national naacp president. >> a larger than usual crowd packed st. peter's basilica in vatican city today to celebrate ash wednesday. the venue drew thousands as pope benedict xvi presided over his last public mass as pontiff. the first since announcing he is retiring at the end of the month. the vatican has announced the conclave to elect a successor will start between march 15 and march 20. those not able to make it to an area at church for ash wednesday service is to give an edge of ashes on the program. several members of the episcopal

had a massive heart attack in charleston and he had to be with her and he would be back monday. he never came back. >> the phone number where they called to place the order was disconnected. one of the employees started digging online. she found an article the claims tomlinson had trouble with the law in north carolina. the i-team obtained a copy of the warrant for his arrest. he is accused of taking $3,000 from a floral shop owner in hendersonville to purchase is the never bought. an arrest warrant turned up in georgia where he was accused of writing bad checks for more than $2,000. he was a no show in court. we tried to locate him. the phone numbers were disconnected. >> put it on the front seat on the floor. >> the loss has taken a toll.

snow showers moving across the area. the warm temperatures of the previous two days we had the so itnd the 40's today, was a wet and slushy snow fall. mixed with sleet and rain. it will be down in the next hour on the eastern shore. it is primarily the middle and upper eastern shore of dealing with the wintry conditions. point south from here it is basically all rain but already finished to the west of baltimore. what you got so far is all you are going to get for the rest of the evening. check it out as we turn over the temperatures. 44 for the high, average for this time of year. 72 for the record high. and one for the record low. right now it is 33. 33 @ jarret saukville. .ook at all those 33's that is what is making this intolerable snowfall because they pavement, the roadways are

wet. as the storm leaves and the skies clear, temperatures are likely to drop going into the morning. there is an advisory for cecil county and northern delaware. keep in mind as the storm waves and the cloud cover breaks, that will make the temperature dropped into the upper 20's in some of the colder outlying areas. any/could i sucked into the early morning hours. lots of sunshine during the afternoon. watch out for some slick spots even though the precipitation will be gone. the moisture might i set early tomorrow morning but in the afternoon it will thought nicely. the winds will shift to the south in the afternoon. high temperatures into the mid- in the upper 40's. wynns out of the south and the waves around 1 foot. in western maryland they had a few inches of snow earlier. the skies had cleared and it will be sunny tomorrow. snow showers friday night as much colder air hits the mountains friday night and sticks around for the weekend,
